Individual lab test or panel: what is the difference?

Understand the practical difference between a focused laboratory test and a broader panel before ordering.

An individual test measures a focused marker

Individual tests are usually the most direct and affordable option when one specific measurement is needed. Examples may include vitamin D, hemoglobin A1c, a thyroid marker or a reproductive hormone.

A single result has limited context. Interpretation may still depend on related measurements, health history, medications, timing and symptoms.

A panel combines related measurements

Panels group multiple tests around a broader purpose such as general wellness, cardiometabolic health, thyroid function or hormone evaluation. They can make comparison easier when several related measurements are needed together.

A larger panel is not automatically better. It may include measurements that are not relevant to the question being asked, while a smaller panel may leave out information a clinician considers important.

Compare the contents before adding an add-on

Open the test details and review the complete biomarker list. Fortivelle’s cart also lets you expand every selected test or panel to see what is already included before accepting an optional add-on.

  • Look for duplicate biomarkers.
  • Compare specimen and collection requirements.
  • Consider whether timing or fasting affects the selection.
  • Ask a qualified professional when you are unsure what is appropriate.
